The WEB Calculator

Ontario Regulation O.Reg  833/90  as amended by Reg. 388/00 sets upper limits for exposure to 702 substances in Ontario workplaces called Occupational Exposure Limits(OEL).

If any of these 702 substances are used in your workplace, this WEB Calculator  will help you identify practical ways to choose the best control strategy for your business. Above all, it may also help you comply with the law by controlling worker exposures to harmful substances below their respective Occupational Exposure Limits.

This step-by-step WEB calculator has been prepared specifically to help small business to control exposure to the over 700 regulated chemical substances. The underlying principal in developing this model is risk assessment at a very basic level based solely on the properties of the substance in question and its likely impact on health. Factors such as different operations, processes and work practices have not been taken into account in making control suggestions. Similarly inhalation has been considered as the main route of entry and therefore control options are based on the inhalation potential only. In large part the calculations are based on some very broad assumptions and in very broad categories and therefore may not be very accurate in some border line cases and in applications where conditions of use differ significantly from normal temperature and pressure.

Many of the regulated substances are known by their more commonly used synonyms. Provision has been made for you to type in a common name or a  synonyms to help you  identify if the chemical in use at your workplace is one of the regulated ones. In the same vein provision for search by the CAS# is also made. A drop down menu of all regulated chemicals arranged in an alphabetical order is also provided for your convenience. However such an ordering scheme takes brackets first followed by numerical numbers and then alphabetical sequence

This is only a guide and points in the general direction of control approaches needed based on several years of experience, concepts used in other jurisdictions and known harmful properties of the regulated substances. Following the advice offered will result in reduction of employee exposures and consequently reduce risk of ill health to workers. However no guarantees are provided or implied.

Proof of compliance with legislated limits still remain the employer responsibility
